My Completely Honest (and Unapologetic) Green Chef Review

Green Chef  is a meal delivery service that prides itself on sourcing organic, Non-GMO, and sustainable ingredients for their chef-inspired recipes. Meal plan options include Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-free, Omnivore, and Carnivore. I tried Green Chef and this is my honest Green Chef review.

In the last couple years, I’ve become a huge fan of meal kit delivery services. Personally, I find these companies to meet a huge need for busy families. There’s a reason people order pizza, or go out to dinner, or stock their freezer and pantry with processed foods – they don’t have time search out and prepare healthy meals. Not to mention take the time to grocery shop.

Or, quite honestly, a lot of people don’t feel confident in their cooking abilities. It’s easier to make a box of this or microwave a container of that. When that doesn’t work out we can pick up the phone and order dinner or take a ride to a restaurant. Regardless of whether you agree with this or not, it’s just the direction our society has gone. We’ve learned to depend on convenience. This is where meal kit delivery services found their niche, they make healthy eating convenient.

So far I’ve reviewed Hello Fresh, Home Chef, and Sun Basket. While all meal kit delivery companies provide the same basic service, each one offers a unique twist. I suggest giving all my reviews a read to see which one best fits your needs. I must say, I do enjoy being your guinea pig. I hope sharing my experiences with these services are helpful to you.

The latest meal kit delivery service I’ve tried is Green Chef.

Green Chef offers all organic, non-GMO, sustainable ingredients for their chef-inspired recipes. As far as I know Sun Basket is the only other meal kit delivery service to offer this.

Before I get into my personal thoughts, along with the pros and cons, and who I think Green Chef is good for, let’s go over the basics.

Green chef offers 7 different meal plans – Paleo, Gluten-free, Vegetarian, Vegan, Keto, Omnivore, and Carnivore. You can either choose a 2-person plan or a family plan.A 2-person plan contains 3 dinners for 2 people – a total of 6 dinners per box. A family plan contains 2 dinners for a family of 4 – a total of 8 dinners per box. However, only the Omnivore and Carnivore can be purchased with the family plan. Therefore, if you want to purchase a Paleo family plan you won’t be able to do so. Maybe that will change in the future but for now that’s the way it is.

The costs for each of the plans are:

2-person Vegetarian: $10.49 per meal

2-person Omnivore: $11.99 per meal

2-person Vegan: $11.99 per meal

2- person Carnivore: $13.49 per meal

2-person Gluten-free: $13.49 per meal

2-person Paleo: $14.99 per meal

Family Omnivore: $11.99 per meal

Family Carnivore: $12.99 per meal

Please note Green Chef also charges a shipping fee of $9 per box. Sun Basket charges a $6.99 shipping fee. Hello Fresh and Home Chef are free shipping.

Green Chef is definitely the priciest of all the meal kit delivery services I’ve tried. I’m thinking this has to do with the use of all organic and non-GMO ingredients. However, Sun Basket is also organic and their prices (including shipping) are cheaper.

Okay, after you sign up for Green Chef you pick the plan you want, along with the number of boxes you want per week, and the menu options. I found it a little strange that you could choose to have more than one box a week, why not just allow more meals in one box so we don’t have to pay extra shipping charges? One thought is it might be to keep ingredients fresh.

You can edit and change your plan any time. You can also pause a week if you need a break or going out of town. Of course, selections need to be made prior to your box getting prepared for shipment – that dates depends on the delivery day you choose.

Make sure you check the proteins you don’t want. This is VERY important because, unlike every other meal kit delivery service, Green Chef doesn’t let you choose your dinners. They choose the dinners for you based on your plan.

To be honest, I was very surprised by this and it took me about 10 minutes to figure out that I don’t choose my meals. After you fill out your plan Green Chef puts together a “personalized menu of curated meals based on your preferences above”. There is a way to get around it. If you change your preferences, and then change back, you’ll be able to see other meal options. But who wants to work that hard? Not me.

I think this is a big downfall to Green Chef. It’s clear they have other recipes to choose from besides the one they pick for you so why not give meal options? People like options. Also, all the meal kit delivery services I’ve used give meal options. Therefore, I strongly feel if Green Chef wants to compete with Sun Basket, and the others, they will change this in the future – hopefully sooner rather than later.  Of course, this might not bother some people but I think most want to choose their meals, especially when spending our hard earn money. What do you think?

If Green Chef doesn’t give meal options in the future then I think they should explain somewhere on their website the reasons why. I mean, maybe they have a good reason for this.

With that said, once I figured out how to finagle the website, and get 3 recipes I was happy with, I put my order in.

Just like with all the other meal kit delivery services I’ve tried my Green Chef order showed up on time and in a sturdy box. And just like every other time I was sooooo excited to have food delivery to my doorstep.

green chef review

The day I got this box I was in a huge rush so I brought it in and plan to get all the ingredients in the refrigerator quickly. When I opened the box I was shocked to see everything thrown into the box and not organized into bags like other services do. Now is this the end of the world? No. Are they trying to save packaging? Probably. Am I spoiled by other services? Most likely. However, I’m used to opening up the box and placing the bags of ingredients into my refrigerator.

This was all of the ingredients from the first Green Chef box. I got out 3 plastic bags and separated the ingredients by recipe and place them in the refrigerator.

Now, in Green Chef’s defense, I didn’t realize that the recipes are color coded. In fact, this didn’t occur to me until I got my second box.  Of course, color-coding makes it much easier to organize the recipes. However, I like having all the ingredients grouped together so I still put them in separate bags.

Also, I went back to the Green Chef website and I didn’t see the “color-coding” organization strategy clearly listed out. It actually took some digging before I found something that talk about the recipes being color coordinated. Again, it’s not the end of the world, and if you prefer less packaging then you won’t be bothered by the recipes not being grouped into bags.

Here are the recipes I tried.

The one thing I loved about the recipes is they placed the meats in a separate plastic bag just in case there is leakage. I guess this still has to do with packaging. Anyway, I wish every meal kit delivery service did this because if a meat package leaks that can ruin the entire box. Personally, I never had that happen but I’ve talked to many people who have experienced this with other meal kit delivery services.

Also, Green Chef doesn’t disappoint with the quality of their ingredients. Everything from the tuna steaks to the chicken to the beef to all the vegetables were fantastic. In a way, this kind of made up for the negatives I talked about earlier. Don’t get me wrong, I still think we should choose our own meals but at least the meals sent were fresh, high quality, and tasty.

The recipes were very easy to follow and didn’t take a lot of time to prepare. All the meals I made took 30 – 40 minutes to cook. If you follow my blog then you know I’m all about meal prep so I was happy to see many ingredients and sauces were prepped ahead of time. This is something that sets Green Chef apart from the other meal kit delivery services I’ve used. I loved having sweet potatoes, onions, and carrots already chopped for me.

I’m not going to talk about all 6 recipes but I’ll share 3 of my favorites.

The first one I made was the lentil mushroom flatbread. I’m a huge flatbread fan so I was excited about this recipe.  As you can see all the ingredients are color-coded and prepped ahead of time for easy cooking. The only thing that took longer than expected in this recipe were the lentils.

I loved the flavors of this pizza – not to mention it was super filling. It also came with a salad that I thought was tasty and refreshing. However, the flavors are on the exotic side. So, if you’re used to American-style foods then this might not be something you enjoy. However, I really liked it.

The recipe cards are super easy to follow. You’ll find step by step directions along with pictures walking you through the process. Just like with any recipe you want to read it through completely before preparing it.

The next recipe I want to share is the BBQ Beef Mini Meatloaves I made. I would say this recipe is more family-friendly and includes classic flavors.

Again, having all the ingredients (especially the sweet potatoes) prepped in advance made it a cinch to throw this recipe together. Also, this recipe could even be prepared completely ahead of time on Sunday food prep day and then stored in the refrigerator. Just warm it up in the microwave when you’re ready to eat.

Just like with the flatbread recipe I feel Green Chef redeemed themselves with this recipe. The flavors were great, ingredients were super high quality, and it was very easy to prepare.

My favorite recipe out of all of the ones I tried was this Feta-stuffed Chicken Breast. Yum, yum, yum. First of all, I don’t think you can ever go wrong with feta. Feta makes it beta!

At first, I was a little nervous to make this recipe because it included stuffing a chicken breast and also preparing vegetables and couscous – there seemed to be a lot going on. But it was easy. It took a little more time than the others but it wasn’t complicated at all. And just like with the others, the ingredients were prepped and portioned out so all components came together without issue. I find it really helpful to have onions, carrots, and other ingredients chopped in advance, this saves at least 10 minutes plus a mess.

I loved everything about this recipe. The flavors were great and I really enjoyed the texture of the Israel couscous. Again, the flavors are a little bit more exotic but if you like different types of spice blends then you’ll enjoy these recipes.

In addition, I portioned out and stored some of the recipes in the refrigerator to enjoy during the week. Everything tasted great after being warmed up.

If you’re still trying to decide if Green Chef would work for you then lets go over some pros and cons.

  • All the ingredients are organic, Non-GMO, and sustainable.
  • If you’re trying to change your eating style to Paleo, Keto, Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-free then Green Chef can be very helpful considering they offer meal plans to reflect these styles. I think this is one thing that sets Green Chef apart from other more popular meal kit delivery services like Hello Fresh or Home Chef that don’t offer specialized meal plans. If you’re not sure where to start when trying to change your eating style then I think choosing a meal kit delivery service like Green Chef will work for you.
  • Meats, seafood, vegetables, and other ingredients are very high quality. Green Chef also puts meats in a separate bag to protect the other ingredients from leakage. I think this is important.
  • Ingredients are prepared and portioned out ahead of time. Meaning, all the recipes I cooked had the onions, carrots, sweet potatoes, and other ingredients chopped ahead of time. I loved this feature because it brought the recipe together very quickly.
  • Ingredients and recipe card are color-coded so you know exactly what ingredients go with what recipe.
  • Recipes are restaurant-quality. They include flavorful spice-blends and sauces. If you like flavors beyond classic American then you’ll enjoy the recipes.
  • It’s easy to skip weeks if you want a break or going to be out of town.

  • The biggest negative is Green Chef doesn’t allow you to choose your own dinner options. They put your box together based on your plan. I really hope they change this because I believe people prefer options.
  • I would like to see more classic-American recipes. I had the same complaint with Sun Basket. Just because someone wants to eat organic foods, or a different eating style, doesn’t mean they want exotic flavors. Some people are just starting out on a new eating plan and I think it would be helpful to offer recipes that offer more American-classic style flavors.
  • This isn’t a huge deal but I would like to see recipes grouped together in the box. I had to group them together anyway so considering I’m spending the money I’d like this to be done ahead of time.
  • Shipping is $9. I think this is on the pricey side.
  • Green chef doesn’t offer the Paleo, Keto, Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-free meal plans for more than 2 people. This means these eating plans wouldn’t be an option if you’re purchasing for your family of 4.

Who do I think would benefit most from Green Chef?

I think Green Chef is best suited for the single person or couple that makes it a priority to eat organic, non-GMO, sustainable foods. If they often eat at restaurants, but want to cook more at home, then I think they would love Green Chef. Green Chef offers restaurant-style recipes that can easily be made in your kitchen. I personally think the prices are cheaper than eating in a restaurant so, in this case, using Green Chef would be more cost effective. Also, if someone likes the essence of surprise, and doesn’t mind Green Chef choosing their meals, then this meal kit delivery service would work great.

Last, I think Green Chef would benefit someone wanting to change their eating style to Paleo, Keto, Gluten-free, Vegetarian, or Vegan. Green Chef makes it easy to learn about and start with those eating styles.

Who do I think wouldn’t enjoy Green Chef?

Families of 4+ looking to for a meal kit delivery service I don’t think would benefit from Green Chef. If you need to feed a large family then I recommend checking out Home Chef. Also, someone who doesn’t like different flavors, a picky eater, and/or not willing to try new cuisines I don’t feel would enjoy Green Chef.

If you’ve been on the fence with Green Chef then I hope my Green Chef review was helpful in your decision. Of course, you can always give it a try and see for yourself if Green Chef is  a good fit for your taste and lifestyle. Here’s a $40 Green Chef Coupon off your first box.
