My Completely Honest (and unapologetic) Review of Sun Basket

Sun Basket is a meal delivery service that prides itself on making healthy cooking easy. It offers organic and non-GMO ingredients along with Paleo, Vegetarian, and Family meal kit options. I tried Sun Basket a few different times and this is my honest review.

I’m not a stranger to meal delivery kit services, I’ve been using Hello Fresh for well over a year now. Since discovering Hello Fresh numerous other meal delivery kit services have popped up so I wanted to give others a try so I have something to compare it to and to see what different options are available. The first one I wanted to try was Sun Basket.

Sun Basket came onto my radar a few months ago. One of the things that drew my attention to this meal delivery service, over the many others, is their healthy specialized meal plan options. Another thing I liked is Sun basket uses only organic non-gmo ingredients for their recipes. In my opinion, this really sets Sun Basket apart from Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, Home Fresh, and the other meal prep delivery services. Don’t get me wrong I think Hello Fresh recipes are great but I’ve often wished for low carb options and the option for organic ingredients. Sun Basket meets both those needs.

Sun basket offers Paleo, Lean & Clean, Gluten Free, and Vegetarian meal plans. Of course, if you don’t need or want a specialized eating plan then Sun Basket has Classic Family Plans too.

Again, this is something I really like about Sun Basket and one of the main reasons I’ve ordered meal kits from them over the last couple months. Now that I’m in my 40’s, and slightly hormonal, I do better on a low-carb eating style. I can manage my weight better, look better, and overall feel much better. With that said I’ve chosen the Paleo plan the times I’ve ordered from Sun Basket.

Personally, I think Sun Basket is a great solution for people who want to change their eating habits to healthier ones but not sure where to start or how to find and cook recipes. So whether you want to eat paleo, clean, vegetarian, or gluten-free the Sun Basket Chefs put together recipes, using only the highest quality ingredients, to meet those eating styles. I find this to be impressive.

Let’s talk about the cost. I know when it comes to meal delivery kit services cost is always brought up – and Sun Basket is no exception.

Here are my thoughts.

Meal delivery services are not going to work for someone who cuts coupons and drives from store to store looking for the best deal on meats. Sun Basket, Hello Fresh, and others like it are not in the discount food business. Meal delivery services are in the convenience business. They are about creating healthy weekly recipes and then providing the ingredients to your door so you can prepare a delicious meal without needing to leave your house. In my opinion, the cost of meal delivery services are reasonable and I find them to be very beneficial for those with busy schedules and who need guidance with meal planning and cooking. I save the coupons for non-food items.

Also, I just want to offer my opinion on the subject of “laziness” when it comes to ordering meal delivery services. I saw a comment one time stating that “our mothers didn’t need meal delivery services and did everything themselves”. That person is correct. Most of our mothers did everything on their own with zero help from convenience services. In retrospect, those services weren’t around so actually our mother’s didn’t have a choice. Personally, I would like to think that my mom who raised 4 kids, worked full-time, and kept a spotless home would’ve appreciate having a nice meal delivered once a week. Just saying. However, agree or not, we now live in a world where convenience services are popping up to meet the needs of busy people and families. So, if you choose do everything on your own with no assistance from any convenience service that’s totally fine. Everyone’s needs are completely different. The goal is to eat healthier and if a person wants to spend money on a service that will help them do that then I say do it. Their money, their time, their choice. Like I said, Sun Basket isn’t for everyone BUT it just might be exactly what someone needs to jump start and sustain their healthy eating habits.

With that said let’s get back to the cost. Sun Basket does cost a little more than the other meal delivery services because as I pointed out they use all organic Non-GMO ingredients.

Here are some prices for Sun Basket. First you choose between Classic Menu and Family Menu. From there you decide the number of recipes you want to receive each week.

Then you decide what type of meals you’d like. Please note you can choose from any of the meals offered each week but when you identify a specific eating style those are the meals that will be highlighted first.

Here are the eating-style options with the classic menu.

And with the family option.

You can read more about the options on the Sun Basket website and see a sample of their recipes.

I use the Classic menu (3 meals for 2 people) and have Paleo set as my default. Something else to note about Sun Basket is they include a shipping charge. Hello Fresh doesn’t do this – their price for 3 recipes per week for 2 people is $69 including shipping. So Hello Fresh is cheaper but the ingredients are not organic (still high quality) and they don’t have paleo or low-carb options. Just something to think about if you’re trying to decide between the different services. Here’s my review on Hello Fresh.

Also, Sun Basket prides itself on sustainability. All of the packaging is 100% compostable and recyclable along with other important values. This is something that has been a concern with other meal delivery services. So if these values are important to you then Sun Basket definitely addresses those concerns.

Okay, let’s go through one of my Sun Basket deliveries and some of the recipes I tried.

First, I want to show you how easy it is to pick your meals for the week.  Each week has about 11 recipes to choose from. Sun Basket will automatically choose the meals that meet the eating style you selected. If you want to swap out another meal then simply click the “change my 3 recipes” button and choose the recipes you want. Each recipe is identified by the eating style so it’s easy to choose recipes that meet your needs.

Also, Sun Basket makes it very easy to skip weeks, all you need to do is click schedule and skip the weeks you want to skip. Please note the cut off time to skip a delivery, make any changes to a delivery, or cancel your subscription is on Thursday 12 pm Pacific Time/ 3 pm Eastern Time, the week before your scheduled delivery date. This is definitely something to make note of because you don’t want to be charged for a week you planned on skipping.

Now let’s move on to delivery.

Just like Hello Fresh, and other meal kit delivery services, Sun Basket ships all the ingredients in a sturdy cardboard box. Every time I get one of these boxes it’s like Christmas! I love having all the recipe ingredients showing up at my door.

Sun Basket provides a super nice recipe book that includes all of the recipes for the week. Hello Fresh sends cards just for the recipes they sent that week. I think this is fine, and does the job, but I definitely like the idea of a recipe book that’s easy to store. Sun Basket also has an App (just like Hello Fresh) where you can view all recipes, skip weeks, and manage your account.

Let’s go over the insulation. I thought Sun Basket outdid themselves with the insulation and the way they cared for the ingredients. Most menus (except vegetarian) include seafood, chicken, and other perishable items so it’s important these items stay cool the entire time in transit. I received this box on a hot day and when I opened it up all the food was perfectly chilled.

All the meats and fish were nestled under the ice packs.

Again, Sun Basket reminds you, with their packaging, that they care about the environment.

They even provide instructions on how to recycle the insulation.

The rest of the ingredients are divided by recipe into paper bags. I like the use of paper bags because you can keep all the ingredients together without taking up a lot of space in the refrigerator.

Okay, let’s go over a couple recipes. Remember, I chose paleo so my recipes don’t include any grains or pasta.

The first recipe was Sole in Parchment with Warm Date and Apricot Salad. Truthfully, I was nervous about this recipe. For one, it’s completely different from anything I make. The only thing I’ve used parchment paper for is baking cookies 🙂 And I can’t remember the last time I ate apricots. I guess what I’m trying to say is this is a very unique recipe to me and something I noticed with the paleo recipes Sun Basket offers. If you’re not adventures then this could be an issue for you. I like trying new foods and cooking styles so once I pushed passed my nerves I was excited to try it.

This recipe was beyond easy to put together – it took no time at all. All I needed to do was prep the spinach and sole in the parchment paper and while that cooked warm up the salad.

I enjoyed everything about this recipe. The sole was absolutely delicious. Light, flavorful and surprisingly filling. The warm date and apricot salad brought this over the top. Until I made this recipe I never heard of a salad like this before. But I loved it and it added a perfect amount of protein and fiber to keep me satisfied.

The next recipe I made were the Thai Turkey Lettuce Cups. One food I’m very picky about is ground turkey. Some brands are super mushy so I was a little concerned when I looked at the Sun Basket turkey. Not gonna lie it looked gross to me. However, once I started to put the recipe together the turkey cooked nicely and had great flavor.

Speaking of flavors, this recipe was bursting with flavor. I never used lemongrass paste before but I absolutely loved it! I also notice that most of the paleo recipe include nuts of some kind. This was fine with me because I’m a big nut fan..but if you’re not then that’s something to note.

Just like the sole recipe, this turkey Thai lettuce cup came together very quickly. You can even make the turkey filling ahead of time to have ready during the week.

The third recipe I wanted to share is this grilled salmon and summer vegetables with chimichurri. I ordered a salmon recipe because I wanted to check out the quality of the salmon. First, I love that Sun Basket puts the salmon in another plastic bag just in case it leaks. Second, I thought the quality of the salmon was great. It was meaty, delicious, and mine didn’t have any bones. Honestly, nothing grosses me out more than bones in fish.

The other ingredients were fine but that small squash confused me. I thought squash like that was only used for decoration during halloween. Clearly, I was wrong. Also, I never used fennel before so I was excited to give that vegetable a try.

Again, this recipe came together fast. Instead of grilling the salmon I cooked it in a frying pan which only took about 8 -10 minutes.

The flavors were great and even though there was no pasta, rice, or grains I felt satisfied just with the salmon and vegetables.

Here are my overall thoughts on Sun Basket:

  • I like that they offer Paleo, Vegetarian, Clean Eating, and Gluten-free options. This is very helpful for people who already eat this way or those who want too.
  • I like that all ingredients are organic and NON-GMO. This might not be important to everyone but for those that want their foods to be organic and free of GMO’s it’s good to know there’s a meal delivery service that meets those needs.
  • Packaging was great and recyclable which is important.
  • I think the prices are reasonable. You can find other meal delivery services a little cheaper but you won’t get the organic food or sustainable food practices.
  • I thought the Paleo recipes were tasty but they are definitely on the unique side. If you’re used to eating tacos and pizza for dinner then switching to sole with a warm date salad might be shocker. However, if you’re up for testing out new foods and cooking styles then this would work for you.
  • I like that there are many recipe options to choose from – most weeks there are 11 recipes. Also, some weeks you’ll find breakfast options too. You won’t find this with Hello Fresh or any other meal delivery service.
  • I would like to see more classic-style recipes. Many of their recipes are on the unique side and include stronger flavors. Personally, I like new foods and flavors but I know some people prefer subtle flavors and classic home-style recipes. Those just starting out could be put off by the unique recipes offered. That’s just my opinion though.
  • I think Sun Basket would work great for someone who wants to eat healthier and lose weight but struggles to meal plan and isn’t quite sure how to find or cook recipes. It’s a great way to get started with healthier eating habits.

Overall, I think Sun Basket is a top-notch meal delivery service. From their website, to recipes, to the quality of ingredients, to the care they take in packaging it’s clear they believe and stand by their goal to make healthy food easy.
