SELF-CARE STRATEGIES: CITRUS REFRESHER



Self-care feels more important than ever. The world seems so very fragile right now, so unstable. While I know that my perception of that is somewhat informed by the constant barrage of news, and also the sad fact that most news seems to be defined by its awfulness – again, why can’t good news be news? – it’s just hard to shake how terrible, how unsettling, and how disheartening so much of it is.



I’m putting this out there because I need to be reminded as much as anyone else to take care. I look back on my 10 Days of Good Stuff project in December, which painted such a picture of calm and seasonal celebration, but I did that because I was barely hanging on and I desperately needed something positive to focus on.

The phrase self-care is a little played out, I know. But I’m not here to encourage expensive getaways, shopping sprees, or products. I’m here to offer simple ideas that we can incorporate into our daily routines to bring a little bit of balance and nourishment back into our lives.

This is the soft launch of an ongoing series, and I can’t wait to share some of the awesome, juicy, and centering strategies that some of my favorite people incorporate into their daily routines.



CITRUS REFRESHER

The inspiration for this was hearing from some people who wanted to incorporate fire cider into their days but aren’t fond of the flavor. I don’t know why, but I love the crazy intensity of taking a tablespoon of this in the morning. It’s like taking a shot …. of wasabi and hot pepper and vinegar. It energizes me. And on top of that, this is the first winter that I haven’t really gotten sick! And I wasn’t really taking the best care of myself, so I attribute some of my immune system resilience to this stuff! Anecdotal side note, possible TMI, it also seems to have cleared up some frustratingly persistent plantar warts! Seriously nothing else that I tried got rid of them, and I had given up. After consuming this daily since November, they’re almost all gone! It might not be related, but given that a number of the ingredients in fire cider have antiviral properties and plantar warts are a virus, I’m choosing to believe that’s why. I love fire cider! And it’s extra yummy when you make it into this delicious drink that is one last hurrah for end of season citrus!



For each drink:

1 grapefruit or similar
1 blood orange or similar
1 lime or lemon
2 tablespoons fire cider (or apple cider vinegar if you don’t have any fire cider)
Sparkling water

Juice your citrus. Use whatever varieties you prefer or have on hand.  I love combining different varieties of citrus because the resulting juice is out of this world. I almost always incorporate grapefruit and lime with whatever else I have, but it’s totally your call. You’ll want about 4-6 ounces of juice ultimately.

Into your glass, mix the 4-6 ounces of juice with 2 tablespoons of fire cider. Top the glass off with your favorite sparkling water. This is a particularly yummy drink to have in the morning. Enjoy!
