6 Must-Have Home Fitness Tools

It is no secret that I’ve struggled over the years to make fitness a regular part of my life.

Before kids, it was easy. Even though I had a busy work schedule, there was always time to get my workout in.

Since becoming a Mom, I’ve struggled to find the time.

Ultimately, it is really about MAKING TIME, something I’ve always known yet struggled to do.

Late last year, shortly after my birthday, I realized that it had to become a priority now or I was going to have regrets. I don’t want to be a 60-year-old who can’t get around well because I was sedentary far too long.

I have tried the latest and greatest video workout programs many times. Ultimately, they don’t work for me. I get bored with them, they have moves that I hate, they are too long….or SOMETHING. Something that makes me dread them.

I think we can all agree that when you dread working out it is never going to be something that becomes a regular part of your day.

So I set out to start exercising at home on my terms. Here are the top six home fitness tools that I can’t live without.

1. Mini-Trampoline (Rebounder)

I know a LOT of women who are happy following a Zumba video to get their cardio in, but sadly, this isn’t me. I was not given the coordination gene, and although I’ve tried to complete numerous video programs that have a cardio element, ultimately I give up.

I used to beat myself up over this, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve come to realize how important it is to enjoy things that are a regular part of my life.

Enter my mini-trampoline – without a question it is one of my favorite home fitness tools.   I got this Mini Rebounder Trampoline from Amazon with gift cards that I got for my 45th birthday.

I can honestly say that it is the first time in EVER that I am doing cardio on a consistent basis. I like to get up early and get twenty minutes in, while simultaneously listening to positive ebooks or programs.

2. Activity Monitor

I know it is cliche, but what gets measured gets done.  I tend to be competitive…especially with myself.  When I set a goal of getting 10,000 steps a day, I am always conscious of where I am at.  I’ll park farther out when I am running errands, and make a trip upstairs to deliver laundry rather than calling the boys to do it.  I’m also much more likely to get outside for a walk or take a break on my rebounder.  There are a lot of great activity trackers on the market, and the key is finding one that is right for you.  I adore my Fitbit and hubby loves his Apple Smart Watch .

3. Adjustable Weight Bench

Although some would call it a non-necessity, one of the best things I ever got was my bench.  Perhaps it is my age, but laying down on the floor or trying to balance on kitchen chairs just wasn’t cutting it any more.  I wanted something that hubby and I both could use, and that would be sturdy enough for the boys when the time came.  I finally settled on the Bowflex 5.1 Adjustable Weight Bench and am thrilled with the decision.

4. Stability Ball

A stability ball is great to use when you don’t have a bench. (I especially love it for chest exercises!)

It is also a a great way to improve your core strength and improve your balance in coordination. One of my favorite ways to use mine is to work it into my ab routine.

I’ve even heard of some people using it as a chair to help with spinal alignment, balance, and abdominal strength. Some reports suggest that doing this can burn up to 350 calories a day. I haven’t tried this myself because Skye takes one look at my stability ball and instantly wants to play.

Mine is much simpler, but I really like this Exercise / Yoga / Stability Ball with resistance bands.

5. Adjustable Dumbbells

We all know strength training is important to our appearance. It is essential to our health as well – especially as we get older. There is no better way to preserve the strength that we had in our youth.

Many women I know shy away from weights. Although we have been told over and over that we don’t need to worry about bulking up, the fear for many women is still there. (Kind of like the fear of eating healthy fat.)

I’ve always loved weight training, but for years I limited myself to my sets of 5-, 10- and 15-pound dumbells. This limited what I could do because there were times when I was ready to increase my weight but I 5-pound jump was too much.

Shortly after Skye was born, I invested in these Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbells and it was one of the best things I’ve ever done fitness-wise for myself.  I love that they have 2.5 pound increments (12.5, 17.5, 22.5, etc.) to help me improve my strength.

If dumbbells aren’t in your budget, exercise bands are a great alternative. (They are also handy to have for travel.) A few years back I bought the Resistance Band Set with Door Anchor and Anchor Strap from Black Mountain.

 

 

6. Yoga Mat

I have to add a quality yoga mat to the list as one of my favorite home fitness tools! Why? Because a few years back I needed a new workout mat and decided to be “economical.” I picked one up at Target for $15 or so.

The mat ended up being so thin that I would have done better putting a beach towel on the floor. It didn’t help my knees when I was doing push-ups and certainly didn’t help me get to my happy place while doing yoga.

I am stubborn, and I suffered with that mat for well over two years. Then I finally gave in and bought a new one.
