What if Your Holiday Gifts Could Make a Difference?

This is a sponsored post brought to you by Give Lively. All opinions are my own.

Once upon a time, in what seems like a lifetime ago, “stuff” was very important to me.

It needed to drive the best car, live in the most perfectly decorated home and have outfits that as my husband liked to joke “cost more than his first car”.

There were times where I was confident that I was going to find happiness once I had that next bright shiny object.

You know what? That day never came.

Oh sure, there were moments of excitement along the way.

And there were plenty of times where I was happy. But the reality is that my happiness never came from the stuff.

If anything, focusing on things stood in the way of true happiness.

It took us losing everything and reevaluating life for me to realize that all that stuff had never been important.   It is creating memories with those that I love that lights me up.

As many of you know, since that time our family has been location independent. We chase seasons, travel on a whim and try to have as many adventures together as a family as we can.

Even there, it doesn’t have to be complicated.  Great conversation, finding a beautiful shell on the beach, sipping a glass of wine while watching the sunset.  Hearing my children laugh or watching them discover something new.

It is the simple things I crave.stop-chasing-fb

Life becomes such a beautiful thing when you stop chasing THINGS and start chasing MEMORIES.

Now I am not saying there is anything wrong with stuff. I like pretty things as much as the next girl.

All I am saying as that when we get so focused on material objects, it is so easy to lose sight of what is important.

During this busy time of year, I wanted to share with you a project that I love and hopefully light a spark in a few of you to turn your holiday gifts into social good.

If I may, allow me to propose an idea.

Perhaps the best gift of all is to give someone the knowledge that they made a difference in something that matters deeply to them.

That same knowledge can also be the best gift to receive.

If you or someone you love has causes that you are passionate about, you are going to be as excited as I was to learn about Give Lively.

I am super-passionate about child hunger and nutrition and this holiday season I’ve created a gift registry through Give Lively’s SmallToken.org to help support this cause.

Give Lively is on a mission to remove the barriers of giving, making charity on-demand a simple and joyful experience.  They’ve taken a mobile-first approach in creating digital tools that connect nonprofits with donors, making giving easy to fit in our lives.
I’ve tried donating to some nonprofits as a gift in the past, and to be honest, on more than one occasion I became overwhelmed by the process.

Once I got so frustrated that I ended up naming a star after the person instead.

Because, sadly, naming a star was an easier process.

Sometimes it can be unclear as to whether the organization received the money and whether the person I donated on behalf of was ever notified that I made a gift in their name.

Give Lively’s flagship product, Small Token, is the premier, charitable gift-giving alternative to traditional material gifts. Small Token was developed to address the notoriously difficult gift-giving process of giving to a non-profit.  (Especially one that is operating on a shoestring budget.)
It is the perfect gift for those of us who have enough stuff and are ready to focus more on making an impact in the world around us.

One of my favorite things about Give Lively is that their commitment to offering their tools to charities for free. The company ensures that nonprofits receive full proceeds of user donations (minus the 2-3% unavoidable credit card fee). Most other services charge a processing fee of 5-7% in addition to a credit card fee.

How Small Token Works:

  1. Go to SmallToken.org and register for your gift registry. Since Give Lively houses every US non-profit within its database, you can focus on causes that truly matter to you. They allow you to support small-town causes like Aldea Children and Family Services to recognized national associations like CARE and the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Foundation. It is simple to find causes that are important to you with their search function.  Aren’t sure what to support?  There are plenty of suggestions by category.
  2. Share your unique link with your friends and family. Here is mine!
  3. They can make donations to the causes you care most about in lieu of a traditional material gift.

If you would like to turn your gifts into social good this holiday season, head over to SmallToken.org and set up your registry!  It is simple and one of the best ways to make a difference that I can think of.
