Cellulite: Fact and Fiction

Do you have cellulite? You are NOT alone! Nearly 90% of women have cellulite!

Honestly, I used to be disgusted with my cellulite. Every time I looked in the mirror and saw my butt and upper thighs, I got a little depressed. But then I noticed that fit women, women who worked out and ate healthy all the time, also had cellulite!

In this article, I want to share the facts and fiction about cellulite and how you and I can combat it!

So what is cellulite and why is it so common?

Cellulite occurs when underlying fat deposits begin to push through layers of connective tissue under the skin.

The connective tissue can be weakened by hormones, lack of exercise and muscle tone, excess fat, and poor circulation. That’s why you see a lot less men with cellulite. They typically have more muscle tone than women so their connective tissues have a tighter weave.

Some facts about cellulite:

* Cellulite gets worse with age. As women age, our bodies produce less estrogen. Less estrogen can mean poorer circulation and a breakdown of connective tissue.

* Cellulite is genetic. If your mother and grandmother had cellulite, chances are, you will have it too. The good news? Genetics has only a TINY influence on your cellulite.

* Exercise can reduce the appearance of cellulite. While exercise can’t prevent cellulite, it can help to reduce it’s appearance. Firming and toning your muscles will help tighten your skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

* Skin fillers and non-invasive procedures can even out dimply skin. Injectable fillers like Restylane (aka, botox) and non-invasive procedures like laser or certain massage techniques can temporarily fill out dimply regions of the skin. However, these procedures can cost $100’s or $1000’s of dollars and the results is ONLY temporary.

* Certain foods can help fight cellulite. Eating a well-balanced, plant-heavy diet can help to reduce inflammation in your body and also keep you at a healthy weight. Drinking lots of water will also help your connective tissue stay strong.

Some fiction about cellulite:

* Only overweight people have cellulite. It is true that the more fat you have on your body, the more likely it’s to put stress on your connective tissue and bulge through the weak spots. However, cellulite happens to women of ALL shapes and sizes (yes, even those Victoria Secret models!!)

* Cardio is best for reducing the jiggle. While cardio does help keep the weight off, it’s not the most effective exercise to reduce the dimpled appearance on your skin. It’s strength training that tightens and tones your muscles and therefore your skin!

* Skin firming creams can cure cellulite. Despite what these creams may say on their label, there has been no evidence that over-the-counter or prescription creams permanently reduce the appearance of cellulite. They may help with body contouring, but that’s about it.

* The clothing you wear affects cellulite. While compression-style leggings will help reduce the jiggle while you workout, they do not reduce the look of cellulite. In fact, clothing that’s too tight may increase the appearance of cellulite because it’s cutting off circulation.

Now that you know some facts and fiction about cellulite, why does it still bother us so much?

It’s because everywhere we turn, we see perfect bodies! But guess what? That isn’t real!! Magazines touch up the models and “erase” the cellulite, certain lighting is used to make skin look picture perfect.

We are constantly comparing ourselves to an unrealistic expectation!

So how do we live with our cellulite?

First, accept and love your body. Yes, I have cellulite. I also have stretch marks and loose skin. But my body gave life 3 times, and for that, I am grateful. I am so much more than some dimples on my thighs and some stretch marks on my tummy. And so are YOU!!

We need to realize that our bodies will never be perfect. I’m not saying we shouldn’t put the effort in to be as healthy as we can. We need to love ourselves but also treat our bodies with respect.

One way to live a healthy life is to eat clean as much as you can. I’m not saying you have to be perfect, even if you just follow the 80/20 rule (eat clean 80% of the time, enjoy some indulgences 20% of the time.) I keep my sugar intake low and try to eat a lot of plant-based foods.

Getting enough sleep is also very important! Stress and lack of sleep cause us to gain weight, which will in turn increase the appearance of cellulite. More sleep = less stress! I understand that stress is a part of life, but I try to keep it to a minimum. I also aim to get 7 1/2 hours of sleep each night.

Finally, exercise! It’s important to try and lower your body fat percentage. This will help your fat cells shrink! I do this by combining strength training with high intensity interval (HIIT) cardio workouts. Having more muscle will help lower body fat and reduce the appearance of cellulite.
